Why Does It Take a Crisis to Bring Us Together?

By Lisaorchard @lisaorchard1

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a week of work and writing. My ankle is healing. I’ve graduated to an ankle brace. According to the doctor, I should be running again in a month.  Yay!

But enough about that today I want to talk about how humans pull together in a crisis. This week hubby and I watched the movie “Chernobyl.” It was very interesting and tragic. For those who don’t remember, Chernobyl was the nuclear plant where an accident occurred in 1986. It told the story about how everyone rallied around to take care of the problem. How men volunteered to turn off valves or remove debris that was radioactive even though it meant certain death.

The movie was emotional. It illustrated how the government lied to workers and the public. It showed how a scientist stood up and spoke against the state, and the consequences of those actions. It made me realize when the chips are down, humans do step up to the plate and take care of what needs to be done.

It reminded me of nine eleven. When the twin towers collapsed and all the responders, ferrymen, and other humans who ran toward the destruction to help all the victims. It was amazing to see it. It did my heart good.

I saw how all men worked together to save the victims. And the burning question I have is this. Why can’t we be like that all the time? Why does it take a tragedy to bring us all together and work together regardless of political ideologies, sexual orientations, or the different shades of our skin?

Why can’t we work like that all the time?  What if we all got together and bonded over cleaning up the Great Garbage Patch in the ocean. Why does it take an attack or an accident? That’s one thing I’d like to see. All of us humans working on a way to clean up the mess we’ve made. Wouldn’t that be great? I’m just not sure how to get it organized. How about you? Do you have any ideas? Leave a comment! I’d love to hear from you!
