Why Classic
Column Radiators
&
Modern Interiors
are a match made in heaven

We wrote a feature at the end of last year where we answered a number of questions posed by BestHeating customers, all about their interior design dilemmas. Many of those questions revolved around how to choose the right style of radiator for their home, and specifically, whether they should choose modern or traditional radiators.

At the time we talked about how you need to think about your overall scheme and think about how your radiator fits into that, rather than going for what’s on trend at the time. But one thing that people still find hard to do is mix modern with traditional. So, this month’s feature is all about how you can incorporate traditional column radiators into modern interiors.

Take the edge off

Scandi-inspired interiors with clean lines, minimalist furniture and monochrome color schemes have been popular for a while. It’s a perfect style for those who are in the ‘less is more’ camp when it comes to interiors. Although these schemes look simple and pared back, they take a lot of thought and a keen eye for detail to get them looking fantastic.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a more modern radiator with clean lines is needed to fit into a scheme like this. But actually, the addition of a more traditional column radiator can take the edge off a modern scheme like this, just giving a hint of added interest and detail that is needed, when everything is so minimal.

This is a great example from @hannahnnewman where the Milano Windsor column radiator sets off the minimal dining furniture, mirror and artwork (reflected in the mirror) perfectly. The addition of the sheepskin draped on the bench and the greenery also do a similar job, just bringing the scheme together.

Make a statement

Opting for a modern monochrome color scheme in your home would lead most people to stick to the white radiators that we’ve all grown up with and know. But what about using the simplicity of a monochrome scheme to make a statement with your radiators?

That’s just what @mocktudorat31 has done here. Installing an anthracite column radiator beneath that black Crittal style mirror just elevates this scheme. And using a traditional column radiator shape gives it a proper wow factor!  Using a more modern style wouldn’t do that as well.

Break all the rules

Bathrooms are a space where you can really go to town with your interiors these days.  The more fun you can have in these spaces the better.  This works as you’re often not spending hours on end in them like you do in living spaces and bedrooms.

You can bring color and pattern into bathrooms in various ways, but flooring is a great way to do this.  That can be using a tile or lino/vinyl and the pattern can be geometric, Moroccan or a more traditional encaustic look.  However, just because you’ve got patterned tiles on the floor doesn’t mean you have to go neutral on the walls.

Playing with different textures and colours of tile on both the floor and wall can create a really dramatic scheme.  But if you’ve got modern geometric patterns on the floor and modern square tiles on the walls, then maybe something more rustic and traditional is needed to ground the space.  This is exactly what @negiathome has done in her bathroom. The very modern tiles are counterbalanced with the traditional radiator with towel rail and the rustic vanity unit.

And @becomingbelgrave has taken it even further in their bathroom with a botanical wallpaper above the white metro tiled walls.  But a traditional roll top bath with traditional style tap and shower attachment in chrome and a vertical column radiator in white, pulls the whole scheme together beautifully.

So, if you thought that having modern interiors meant you had to have modern radiators, then think again!
