Why Boxing is a Family Affair

By Michelle Hernandez @Familylovesa
So if you follow me on Twitter these days, you may notice that I am tweeting lots about boxing. This past week was a Fight Week here in San Antonio. I love boxing and Top Rank brought a great lineup - Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. v. Marco Antonio Rubio and Nonito Donaire v. Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr. - who are heading the event.
Sure I like sports, my husband is a P.E. teacher and Coach, so they are apart of my daily life. But no other sport has sparked my interest like boxing has.
My initial exposure comes from my husband. When we were dating, we would often gather at a friend's house to watch the big fight, this tradition has carried on through the years. Not only would it be our friends, but their dad, uncles, cousins would all be there! These last few years, as he has kept up with his love for boxing, my interest in the sport has grown and it is something that we share. It is now a common interest and it keeps us talking and engaged and helps our relationship. And It's fun!
But what grew my love for the sport are the documentaries. Shows such as HBO's 24/7, show insight into the boxers lives and makes these boxing heroes, real people. People that you know, love and root for on fight night!
Boxers also love their culture and rep their hometown and countries with such pride. I understand that...I love San Antonio and write about the family events that my city has to offer. Before the fight with a Mexican boxer fighting, the Mexican National Anthem plays, and it is something that we will call the kids in to watch. Yes, along with the American National Anthem! We are proud to be of Mexican Decent and it is something that we like to share with our children.
My other connection to the sport is that many boxers are also fathers and have such great passion for providing for their families and others around them. The documentaries show their hard work and passion to be the best for their family and the fans. Boxers choose to fight for a living and it is something that I can respect whole heartedly.
So to others it may feel like I have taken a bit of a tangent from my normal family fun activities in San Antonio, but to me it is one in the same. When my children are old enough, it may be a family date night, but for now it's a special date night for me and my love!
So, here is the fun stuff - some pics from this week's Weigh-In, Tweet-up and Fight Night!
