White Men Increasingly Don’t Work

By Eowyn @DrEowyn

Under this POS of a president, U.S. labor participation rate keeps plunging.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of American civilians 16 or older who have a job or are actively seeking one dropped to a 35-year low, from 63.2% in September to 62.8% in October—the lowest it has been since February 1978, when Jimmy Carter was president.

We know that the unemployment rate among Blacks is much higher than the national average. But the graph below shows that it’s not just Blacks who have dropped out of the labor force — white men are, as well.

Nor is it a recent phenomenon. The labor participation rate of U.S. white men over the age of 20 has systematically declined for more than half a century, from a high of 88% in 1955 to 72% today.

Work is important for a person’s sense-of-self and self-esteem. Gainful employment is especially important for men. So what does the declining labor participation rate of white American men say about our society and our future?
