When is Android 7 “Nougat” Coming to My Phone?

Posted on the 07 December 2016 by Tftb @TFTB

Google release Android N's first beta build in March 2016, 5 months later Android 7.0 "Nougat" (Android N) was released on August 22, 2016. With Nexus devices being the first to receive the latest update, LG V20 became the first smartphone to be released with Nougat. This was quite unlike Google to announce LG V20 being the first device despite their own smartphone Pixel and Pixel XL which was designed and marketed by Google in the plans. Which was later released on October 4, 2016.

When is Android 7 “Nougat” Coming to my Phone?

Unlike earlier releases, Android N was actually released as a public beta for all Nexus owners and modders in March 2016 which means all the OEMs had their hands on it since March 2016. This potentially means all OEMs can release Android N for their devices very quickly. Usually it takes anywhere between 6-10 months for many OEMS to release the latest Android release as they work their way to integrate their custom UI in the stable version of Android released by Google. This post is to help you know if your device is getting an Android N update, when and if it's already released.

INCOMPATIBLE DEVICES

There are few devices which aren't compatible with the new Vulkan API which Nougat supports for better gaming graphics and performance. This isn't just software update, but Vulkan API requires a hardware suppot for OpenGL ES 3.1. So devices with Snapdragon 800/801 aren't compatible which include Samsing Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Nexus 5, OnePlus X, Moto X(2014) and HTC One M8.

But you still can get Android 7 "Nougat" for your old device, keep reading.

If you can't find your device in the above list, your device might not be compatible or not getting the update. If you still want to be sure, leave a comment and we shall update you and the post with details of Android N Support for that device.

If official update is not coming your way for some reason or if your device is deemed incompatible, don't worry you still can install third-party custom ROMs for your device. The most secure, trustworthy and widely used ROM is the CyanogenMod[CM], CM 14 is based on Android 7 "Nougat" which will support a lot of devices which the OEMs aren't panning to update.
For devices deemed incompatible CM14 might be available for your device, CyanogenMods made a long list of devices which are receiving experimental builds of CM14.1 which even support incompatible devices.
