What You Should Know About Weight Belts

Previously weight belts were only worn during Olympic weightlifting events. Now it seems like even the most recreational weightlifters are wearing them. The question is if they actually help these people.

Benefits of Wearing Them

While they are not as fashionable as concho belts and are not likely to end up in an art institute any time soon, they offer several benefits. The main purpose of wearing a weight belt is to reduce lower back pressure. A belt reduces pressure on the lower back by compressing the abdominal cavity. The result is more abdominal pressure and support for the spine. Therefore, the muscles surrounding the spine don't have to produce as much force during exercise. This reduces the amount of compression the spine feels.

Additionally, a belt can prevent hyperextension. The sensation of the belt keeps exercisers thinking about maintaining good posture. It acts like a wall that connects the hips and rib cage. This prevents overextending to the front and back as well as side to side. People wearing a belt, for this reason, may wear it looser because they aren't trying to gain the compression. Others wear a belt because it gives them more confidence in their posture.

Types of Belts Available

There are many types of belts on the market. The most common types available are traditional bodybuilding and powerlifting belts. These are the same width around the entire belt and are great at preventing hyperextension. Ones that are thicker or made with different materials are also available. These often have a wider piece in the back and are used to relieve lower back pressure.

Today everyone seems to be wearing a weight belt. Weight belts are a great way to reduce lower back pressure and avoid hyperextension. They do this by forming a rigid wall and contracting the abdominal cavity. They are available in many types of materials and sizes.
