Did Barry Alvarez Go Straight into Coaching College Football?
Actually, Alvarez spent coached at Lincoln Northeast High School from 1971-1973 and at Lexington High School from 1974-1975. He would then cross the Missouri River to coach at Mason High School in Iowa from 1976-1978 before taking the linebackers coaching job at Iowa.
Is Wisconsin’s Student Section Really One of the Best in College Football?
Plenty of people seem to think so. While Nebraska students have been implementing a new tradition following the end of the third quarter, Badger students show an intense amount of energy as House of Pain’s “Jump Around” blares through the stadium before each home game’s final stanza. They get into the game, they’ll stay there and are one of the loudest bunches in the entire stadium.
Did You Know?
The badger was selected as Wisconsin’s mascot in 1889 whose name (Buckingham U. Badger, though he goes by Bucky) was selected via a 1949 contest. A live badger was used briefly in 2003, but a raccoon was eventually brought in for substitution as badgers aren’t too friendly.
Like Nebraska, Wisconsin began playing football in 1890. Their first game was a 106-0 pasting of University of Wisconsin–Whitewater which remains the school’s most one-sided victory.
They Badgers play two trophy games: One with Iowa for the Heartland Trophy and another with Minnesota for Paul Bunyan’s Axe which has a six foot long handle.
