The Reason I Dressed – Getting around Milan
For the next week or more I’ll be sharing all about my time in Milan, including; where I stayed, what I got up to and more importantly what you can do as a family in Milan and where you can eat GLUTEN FREE (part of a new series)!!
It is chilly in Italy, and in my opinion January and February are always much colder than November and December. Milan was pretty cold and pretty damp but we had so many things to do and see in the city that I wasn’t about to let the weather stop me from going out!
You would think that it is easier for us to take our car to get around, since we drove to Milan. BUT IT IS NOT!! Public transport is the only way to go.
If you are visiting Milan, I highly recommend you rely on public transportation to get around and don’t limit yourself to the subway! Parking is a NIGHTMARE everywhere in Italy, but especially awful in big urban centers, and if you’re not used to parking “like an Italian” you many never find a spot.
The Tram
I love the old trams in Milan, with their antique lights, real wood benches, steal chains and laminate panels. There’s no need to go on a special tourist ride of the city, all you have to do is buy your ticket, and jump on the “Linea 1″ – The 1 Line and away you go. This line is serviced by Milan’s vintage trams and goes to many of the nicest tourist spots from the Sforzesco Castel to the Duomo!
In the next week, as I share my Milan weekend itinerary, I’ll give you specific travel details on how to take the tram or other transport to where you want to go! It is as simple as buying a ticket in a cigarette shop (not kidding), punching it onboard and looking out the window! If you are planning a visit to Milan for the EXPO 2015, I recommend you read this really comprehensive post about how to use the Milan transport system by Milan based travel bloggers The Crowded Planet, they are also doing Milan Mondays every week with new articles about the city from an insider’s perspective!
What I Wore
For my first full day of outdoor sightseeing I wanted to be WARM…..stylish but WARM! Oversized “blanket” scarves are totally trending this year. Good thing I found this one at one of Italy’s cheap markets last year for a euro. I’ve written before here about Italy’s markets and how to find them in the town you are living / staying in. I’ve found designer clothes at a euro or two, including new Armani pants for 3 euros! Italy doesn’t have many thrift or used options, so these markets are the next best thing!
My hat is by the Italian brand Rossella Carrara, bought online here and my coat is also by the Italian brand Stefanel. Stefanel is hugely popular in Italy for their excellent quality knits and you can use this link for free shipping on all purchases over 100£. I’ve been wearing this coat non-stop this season, and plan on wearing it next season as well!
If you’re interested in this new “U” silhouette shaped coat that all the fashion bloggers are wearing I wrote about the trend here, and I predict that it will still be all over the place in 2015/2016.
My bag is by the unknown Italian artisan brand Be*Why Accessories who have just launched a small online store. This bag is not yet available for sale online, however you can enter for a chance to win it with the below giveaway!
Valued at $160 it is made with Italian gold leather and leopard printed cavallino fur and a solid bronze chain. Another item I haven’t taken off this season!
