What to See and Do in Naples

Join Our Pompeii Tours to Discover the Beauty of Naples

Naples is a heady mixture of chaotic, historic, and inspiring. It’s one of the oldest and busiest cities in Europe and is bursting at the seams with character and fun things to do. Around every corner there is a new feast for the eyes, from impressive churches to ancient ruins and everything in between.
Here are some of the best things to do while you’re in town.

1. Visit Pompeii

The ancient city of Pompeii has a tragic past. When Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD it covered the entire city in ash, leaving a museum of bodies, houses, and ancient life frozen in time. Today, visitors can wander the streets of the city and learn more about the lifestyles of the people who resided there back then and the volcano that devastated the region.

2. Herculaneum

Though Pompeii is probably the most famous settlement in Naples’ vicinity, Herculaneum also has something to offer. It too was destroyed in Vesuvius’ eruption, leaving well-preserved scenes of everyday Roman life from thousands of years ago.

3. Eat Pizza

Italy is known for its foodie delights, and Naples is no exception. In fact, the city was one of the major birthplaces of the pizza, bringing cheesy flavours and doughy delights to the world.

4. Get a Drink in Piazza Bellini

One of the best ways to experience the hustle and bustle of Naples is to sit back and relax with a drink and watch the world go by. Grab a spot in the vibrant Piazza Bellini, which is flanked with bars and is the meeting spot for many young, local folk. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the ancient ruins that smatter the square while you’re sipping on your drink of choice.

5. Museo d’Arte Contemporanea

Art lovers will want to hotfoot it straight to the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, an institution that’s home to some of Italy’s most impressive artworks. Here, you can see works by world-famous artists like Jeff Koons and Anish Kapoor. Perhaps the most impressive part is the gothic 14th Century church that is tucked away between its walls.

6. Fontanelle Cemetery

Fancy something a little different? Head below the busy streets of Naples to an old quarry that was turned into a burial site in the 17th Century after the plague killed more than 250,000 residents. Here, you can witness eerie piles of ancient bones and learn more about the spiritual tale of caring for lost soul’s skulls.
