We’re all going to be stronger, skinnier, more efficient, and live a more balanced life in the new year, right? Two thousand fourteen is going to be our big year, correct? I’ve never believed in new year’s resolution because if you’re not willing to make a change now, what makes you think you’re going to change on January 1? I didn’t have a resolution for 2013, instead, I had the goal of releasing patterns. As the year went on though, I slowly realized that it wasn’t my calling, at least not for now, and that something else, something I was more passionate about, was starting to brew. In June and on a whim, I published the first Portrait of a Seamstress post. Just like my How To Draft A Sloper post, I received such positive comments that I continued the series. After the third or fourth post, I thought bigger than my blog – could I turn this into a book? Printed on paper, the words of the various seamstresses and seamsters could serve as inspiration to both sewers and nonsewers. You don’t’ have to sew to feel motivated to pick up your hobby after reading Nilah, Kenneth, or Heather’s words. But I didn’t want the book to be a passive activity, instead, I wanted it to be interactive and engaging. What if in between the interviews, I offered mini tutorials on both basic and advanced pattern making techniques? That would give a detailed glimpse to nonsewers about what exactly is involved in our craft and it would be informational to those wanting to learn more about patternmaking. And because I’m always one for a little humor, throwing cute commentary on the sewing world would pull everything together and top it off with a bow.

So instead of collaborating with websites, guest posting on blogs, and creating in depth tutorials, this is what I’ve been working on and will continue hammer through in 2014. It feels amazing to work on something slowly and whole-heartedly. Along with my sewing projects, I sleep, eat, and breathe this book. Post and project frequency here on Madalynne won’t change, but if you continue to not see me around the web, this is why. And most likely, I won’t mention it again. I’ll just come out with it when it’s ready. So be patient, hang in there with me, I have lots for you in the future. This book is only the beginning.

In the meantime, I’d love it if you’d participate in a short, anonymous survey (less than 10 questions). What is your favorite post? What is a post you hate? What tutorials would you like to see on the blog? Let me know and tell me bluntly. That’s the only we Madalynne + I will grow. Click here to participate.
