What’s For Dinner – Week Starting 5 March 2016

What's For Dinner Button

In an effort to be a whole lot more organized this year, and because everyone is always posting what delicious food they make, here is what I have been serving my family for the past week. I also envision this being a detailed account of how I fail miserably at meal planning when life gets too busy. But hey, it’s real life. Speaking of real life, I am not and never will be a food blogger. If I ever were to post food pictures for you, I apologize in advance for how awful they are.

  • Saturday: We were a family divided tonight. Holly and I were at the dance competition, and Jim and Connor were visiting family in Texas. I have no idea what the boys had for dinner, but Holly and I had a quick dinner of pizza that we brought in for the girls and parents knowing there was no time to go out and grab a bite to eat.
  • Sunday: Holly and I came home to find dinner waiting for us in the crockpot thanks to my darling friends who were watching the dogs for us while we were gone this weekend. After three days of eating out or grabbing food from the snack pile we brought with us, it was wonderful to come home to something hot and delicious and homemade. It was probably the nicest thing anyone has done for us, as I could worry about getting Holly to bed at a decent hour rather than figuring out what to feed her. When you have a daughter who is exhausted to the point of tears, this makes all the difference.
  • Monday: Jim and Connor came home today but not in time for dinner. We had to do some car shuffling, so we grabbed soups and salads from Panera and called it a night.
  • Tuesday: While everyone was home, no one seemed interested in eating tonight. It was odd. Connor started track practice and absolutely could not wait for food; he settled for a few bowls of cereal. Jim did not want anything substantial after working out so he made himself a sandwich. That left Holly and me, and we decided on grilled cheese sandwiches. It did the trick.
  • Wednesday: Holly ate before dance, and again Connor was too hungry to wait so Jim and I had a nice dinner out while Holly was at dance. It is a local restaurant that serves good food fairly quickly. They have this deconstructed filet mignon sandwich with Gorgonzola sauce that I absolutely adore. It is one of the few times I will voluntarily order a steak because it is that good.
  • Thursday: Thursdays are never an easy day for dinner, but it was particularly tricky as Connor had three events tonight and called about needing a ride home just as Jim and I were getting ready to start dinner. Thankfully, we kept things easy with gyros. I was able to keep everything warm so everyone could eat when they finally got home for the night. Tricky indeed.
  • Friday: After work, I headed over to the dance studio to help out painting the scenery for the ballet for a few hours with the idea that I would meet Jim and the kids somewhere for dinner. It turns out crappy kids are not ideal for going out to eat no matter what age they are, so Jim decided to make grilled cheese sandwiches and soup for dinner. Soup…it’s what’s for dinner.

I don’t think we did too badly this week considering no one was home last weekend to plan meals or hit the grocery store. Thankfully, we do have a rare relatively quiet weekend, so my goal is to get on the bandwagon of meal planning. I better get started.
