Since more people are now becoming conscious buyers, it is important that products especially in cosmetics, to label their products properly. If you could notice some products have vegan or "Vegan-Friendly" labels and there are also those that are "Cruelty-Free" with a bunny logo. I'm sure many are already familiar with those words, but do you know the difference between vegan-friendly and cruelty-free products?
What is Cruelty-Free?
As mentioned in my previous post about cruelty-free products, vegan is not synonymous with cruelty-free. The term "cruelty-free" only implies that no form of animal testing at any point in the creation of a product. So beauty products can have animal products in it but still be labeled as cruelty-free because it was never tested on animals at any stage of production. Those commonly used ingredients such as honey, beeswax, lanolin, collagen, and the like which are all obviously not vegan, but it doesn't mean they are not cruelty-free.
What is Vegan-Friendly?
According to Logical Harmony, a product that is vegan does not contain any animal ingredients or animal-derived ingredients. This includes, but not limited to, the common ingredients I mentioned above such as honey, beeswax, lanolin, and collagen.
To many people, the term "vegan" also means that a product is free from animal testing as well. And yes, all products labeled as vegan or vegan-friendly are not just free of animal products, they should also be free of any animal testing.
