What is the Difference Between Prayer and Magic?

By Sjbedard @sjbedard

On the surface, prayer and magic seem to be similar. Both are a petition to a supernatural being with a hope of gaining some benefit. So what is the difference?

One of the main differences is that prayer is not limited to petitions. Prayer can also be used for thanksgiving, confession or worship. Magic is always used as a supplication. Another difference is that magic is used to manipulate supernatural power. It is not really a request but rather a tapping into a force. Prayer takes place in the context of a relationship. Christians do not demand that God gives what is requested. It is understood that God will give us what is best.

Speaking of magic, there are those within the prosperity movement that move prayer dangerously close to magic. They see faith as a force to get what they want including health and wealth. All Christians must understand this difference and see prayer for what it is.
