If you are trying to keep yourself and your family healthy, fresh, natural foods and plenty of fluids are recommended. Organic and farm-direct food is rising in popularity as industrial hormones, preservatives, and artificial coloring and dyes are shunned.

But there could be contaminants lurking in your home tap water. A recent study conducted by the Associate Press found that 20 percent of homes – that is 1 in every 5 investigated – had trace amounts of pharmaceutical drugs in their water. Not just pain killers, but anti-depressants and birth control chemicals were found in American tap water.

If this sounds alarming to you, know that it was rather alarming to GE engineers too. The GE MWF filters have been proven to significantly reduce all sorts of water contaminants, including those prescription medication traces that might be found in your water.

We were fortunate to have a chance to ask some questions of John Nichols, the marketing manager for water filtration products at GE Appliances.

“The advanced GE MWF filter, which is GE’s most popular refrigerator water filter, is certified by NSF International and reduces 15 contaminants, such as lead, cysts and mercury,” explained Nichols. “In addition, it has been tested by a third party to remove over 94 percent of five trace pharmaceuticals, including the active ingredients in antidepressants and birth control pills, from drinking water and ice.”

Those five pharmaceuticals are Ibuprofen (a common anti-inflammatory), Atenolol (a beta-blocker commonly prescribed for heart conditions), Fluoxetine (an anti-depressant), Progesterone (a hormone used in birth control products) and Trimethoprim, an antibiotic used often in treating urinary tract infections. Nichols and other GE representatives have also pointed out that just because these pharmaceuticals were found in some homes’ tap water, does not mean that every home has them in their system.

While the AP investigation focused on homes connected to major metropolitan water systems, there is a possibility of unhealthy substances being found in well water also. Nichols recommends that concerned consumers get their water tested by a qualified lab to determine which, if any, contaminants are actually present.

Nichols also told Goedeker’s that while conducting research on refrigeration and recycling, they found that water quality was listed as one of consumers’ top concerns. Therefore GE has developed their expertise in filtration technology and providing clean water for their customers.

Obtaining a GE MWF filter for your home is simple and easy.

The GE MWF filter fits millions of existing GE refrigerators already installed in consumer’s homes, as well as models currently being produced, including side-by-side and French door refrigerators,” said Nichols. “To get the new level of advanced filtration in an existing refrigerator, a consumer would have to remove the old filter and install the new MWF filter. Installing and uninstalling the filter is simple – it only requires a simple half turn.”
