What Are the Different Types of Gin?

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

You might consider yourself a gin drinker and have a glass on a regular basis. However, if you are like most you might not even really know what gin is and how many different types there really are. If you do a bit of research or talk to someone, they might tell you that gin is simply a vodka that is flavored like juniper. However, gin is a bit more complicated than that. Both gin and vodka are made from grain spirits, but gin is steeped with different types of botanicals such as roots, citrus peels, and dried herbs, and then redistilled. Vodka on the other hand is distilled and redistilled until you taste the grains that it was made from.

When it comes to gin there are specific types that have distinct characteristics. This article will talk about some of the different types of gin that you will also find when you visit here https://www.ishopchangi.com/en/category/wine-and-spirits/wine-and-spirits-spirits/gin

London Dry

London Dry originated in England, but is produced throughout the world. This is the type of gin that most people are familiar with as this is what is most often used in a gin and tonic or a martini. When you try this gin you are going to find hints of juniper because this is the most dominant flavor for this type of gin. There are some types of London dry that use dried peels or fresh citrus peels before they are distilled and this provides a brighter citrus flavor.

Plymouth

Another style of gin is Plymouth gin. There is only one distillery that makes this type of gin and it is located in the United Kingdom. This distillery is one of the oldest in the world and it has been through many owners. Plymouth gin is special as it was named in a cocktail book and was in 23 gin recipes found in the book. For this reason, it became very popular during the 20th century when gin was entering the market.

When it comes to flavor, Plymouth gin is a bit drier than a London dry and has more citrus flavor. The end is typically a bit spicier as well. Another reason this gin is special is because the water that is used is from the Dartmoor reservoir, which provides it with a fresh and clean flavor.

Old Tom

If you are looking for a hipster gin, Old Tom is the choice. Old Tom was a sweeter style of gin that came onto the market during the 18th century. During the 16th through 18th centuries many people were making their own gins and they were not good. When Old Tom hit the market it was actually the street name for gin. Today, Old Tom is a good gin that has distilled botanicals. The sweetness typically comes from the high amounts of licorice that are used during the distillation process. The gin does not taste like licorice, but using licorice affects the texture of the gin and thus the taste as well. Old Tom works well in mixed drinks because of its sweetness.

Genever

Genever is the original gin style and dates back to the 16th century in Holland. Base grains for this type of gin are malted, which means the grain starts to germinate and then is halted. This type of gin is similar to whisky as it has a stronger flavor. It also has botanicals and juniper flavors, but not as much as other types of gin.

If Old Tom is considered a gin with a rich flavor, Genever has a flavor that is even richer. This means that it is really rich when used in cocktails. Mixing it with a sweet vermouth is common. You can also mix it with some bitters and a bit of sugar. The malt wine has a predominant flavor so if you mix it with something that has a richer flavor it tastes really good and works very well.

These are the four basic types of gin that you will find throughout the world. Drinking gin straight on the rocks is common as this is a great-tasting alcohol. It is also one of the best mixers that you will find.
