Before heading off into the unknown why not read our guide on what creatures you should keep an eye out for when adventuring about?

Dingoes

Fraser Island is renowned for its Dingoes, known for being the purest dingos in Australia. There are around 25 to 30 families of Dingoes on the island, with each having up to 12 dingoes per pack. They are truly a sight to see, seen roaming about the sandy beaches and within the lush bushland of the island. However, safety precautions are needed for these animals, as they can be aggressive to tourists with food or young children.

Whales

The majestic Humpback Whales migrate to the warm waters of Australia to breed and birth their calves every year, swimming past shores of Fraser Island to rest along the way. Visitors can spot these incredible creatures roaming the sapphire waters from July to November, either choosing to see them from the coastal beaches or up closer in the local tourist boats.

Dolphins

The Bottlenose Dolphin are locals at Fraser Island, always seen roaming about the shallow waters of the beachfront. Another common dolphin species found here are the Humpback Dolphins, found at Tin Can Bay frolicking in the tidal creek areas. Visitors can even join in on the dolphin feeding available here, wading into the shallow water where the dolphins swim right up and say hello. This has been a long tradition for 30 years, starting when a dolphin nicknamed Scarry arrived in the bay, bringing along his pod.

Reptiles

The island is jam-packed with sunshine, making it a paradise for cold-blooded reptiles. 79 known species of reptiles reside on Fraser Island, including snakes, lizards and more! If you are hoping to spot one during your adventure amidst the island, try to soften your step and look for spots with flat rocks or smooth sand, as these creatures spend a lot of their time sunbaking the day away.

Birds

Bird watching is one of the most popular activities on Fraser Island. With over 354 different bird species found in the trees and sky of Fraser Island. Simply trek through the bushland of the island and hear the different bird tunes drift through the warm air as you go about your adventure!
