I wanted to start with a printed skirt, like this one by Ann Taylor, because I think it seems like a no-brainer for a work wardrobe but can often feel a bit limited.  Few women know what to do with a printed skirt besides choose tops in white or black or ones that match the colors found in the print.  While these are perfectly fine options, if your work environment is casual enough, consider a denim shirt which will match any print you pair with it.

Next, I want to talk about printed tops, like this one from Anthropologie– another no-brainer for the working wardrobe.  However, beyond a pair of black pants, black shoes and a black handbag, few women know what to do with a top like this.  Instead, I chose basic pair of navy pants, which are just as versatile as a black pair of pants, switched out a pair of black shoes for a comfortable pair of coral peep-toes and finished the look with a relaxed white cardigan and navy necklace.  With these simple finishing touches the outfit looks more pulled together.

Lastly, a basic black and white dress, like this one from Lord and Taylor,  a no brainer, right?  Well, not really, especially for work.  Black and white, in particular in the work environment, is not for everyone and wearing it could be detrimental to your success, read more about it here.  If after reading about black and white as a color combination you do find you can wear it, don’t forget to add puches of color to the outfit.  In this case, I chose a red blazer.  Keep in mind, however, red is not a color to wear when you are asking for something as the color can evoke feelings of aggression or anger in others.  Perhaps you should skip asking for that raise while wearing this jacket?
