Welcome to this Sunday night series, here to help you figure out work outfits for Monday morning, called “What am I going to wear to work tomorrow?” Using pieces that might be hanging in your closet, my goal is to give you new ideas on how you can wear wear them differently and get the most out of what you own. In addition, with the pieces and coordinating components, another goal in this weekly post is to also give you some directed shopping inspiration, should you find you like any of the items I am featuring.
This week I am going to put outfits together using a navy blazer, a black suit and a basic short-sleeved colorful cardigan. To get shopping information on all pieces, click the images and links below.
Okay, onto the outfits.
Look #1- The Short-Sleeved Cardigan

A short-sleeved cardigan, like this one from Banana Republic, is an easy work staple that can finish off any business look. With many colors to choose from, to change things up, you may have purchased a colorful one, yet, found yourself not sure what to do with it besides wear it with your basic black pants or jeans. One idea, when selecting a colorful cardigan, is to choose it based off prints you already own. Here, for example, I chose an emerald cardigan that pulls the emerald out of the printed pencil skirt. The coral layering tank and purple earrings were chosen as a complement to the skirt, as well.
Prints are not only a great way to give you color direction when buying solid colored pieces for your wardrobe, but they give you great direction on how to combine color. Few would think of combining coral, emerald and purple, however, by seeing it in a print, it makes more sense.
Look #2- The Navy Blazer

How to wear a navy blazer, like this classic one by J. Crew, is one of the highest searched topics on my blog because it can be worn so many ways. For more navy blazer looks click here. Given how popular this staple is, I thought I’d create a work outfit using it. Here, I paired it with a red and white striped dress that looks just as good without a jacket. For a bit of an unexpected twist (because red, white and blue can often be a bit expected), I went with a yellow handbag. If you don’t like yellow, a color like green could also work in its place. Lastly, to pull in a bit more blue, I chose a navy pair of sandals and necklace. If sandals aren’t allowed in your office, there are plenty of navy pumps out there and nude shoes would work just as well.
Look #3- The Black Suit

A black suit, like this Ann Taylor skirt suit, is a great work staple, but it is only as versatile as all the options you have to wear with it. I remember seeing a woman on a bus in a black suit that she wore in a pretty boring manner. As she sat in front of me I kept coming up with all the other ways she could wear it. Of course, I blogged about, which you can read here.
You’re probably smart enough to have already thought about putting a color underneath your black suit, so, I want to talk about taking it one step further with your accessories. Instead of choosing boring ones, what about color? Look at the colors you’re wearing to layer with your black suit and think about what pop colors would complement the layering piece you’re planning on wearing. In this case, I chose mint green earrings to work with the pink. With just smallest hint of a pop color, the look gets upgraded.
I also want to talk about the shoes and the handbag color, which is blush. Blush pink is a very faint pink and can work just as versatilely as nude or tan shoes and handbags. If you’re no stranger to this blog, you know that I love tan shoes, however, if you’re filled up on tan shoes and are looking for an alternative that will get you the same amount of mileage, a blush color is a great choice.
Remember, the key to a great looks is in how you finish it, which can be achieved through your accessories! For more advice on that, you can read my five reasons why accessorizing is so important.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and let me know if you need any more help figuring out work outfits for tomorrow or the rest of the week!
