There’s a new kid in town and he’s selling new and vintage comics, graphic novels, action figures, collectibles, watches, cufflinks and kitsch!
West End Comics recently opened in Parkdale (Toronto) and sits (conveniently for me) at the corner of Queen St. West and Sorauren Ave.
Trish and I stopped in for the first time yesterday and while it shouldn’t have taken us that long to walk in the front door, it was worth the wait.
Shop owner Kirk is a local resident and told us that he’s had his eyes on the space for the last couple years – and when the chiropractor’s office closed, he found his opportunity. Within just a few minutes it’s easy to tell that he loves everything that has to do with his shop. He’s a confessed Trekkie and hopes to bring in a projector so he can run Star Trek Tuesdays (stay tuned for that info!) and when we were in the store there were classic cartoons on the iMac at the counter.
West End Comics also has plans to be a place that children can come to learn about and enjoy comic books. With back issues priced as low as 25 cents each, children will have the opportunity to dive into the worlds of Batman, Superman, Captain America, Spider-man and Wonder Woman. I’m a big fan of that plan – while I may not have started out as a comic book reader as a child, many fans did – and that tradition should have an opportunity to continue without parent’s needing to break the bank
This is a great chance for a local entrepreneur to succeed in Parkdale. We are a diverse and awesome neighbourhood and guess what – comic book fans are diverse and awesome too.
I’ve got a ton of confidence and hope that West End Comics will become a fixture in the community and that we’ll be talking about the new and exciting things that Kirk is cooking up again in the near future.
