Wendy’s, Gurgaon: Revisited

By Indian Food Freak @IFoodFreak

Paneer shashlik burgerWendy’s, which recently opened in India, has generated lots of good and not so good discussions on various social networks. Their burgers have received some rave reviews while there was also a small glitch which drew many eyeballs. While Indian Food Freak had reviewed Wendy’s earlier (read here), this is my first visit to Wendy’s and I am told that they have slightly tweaked their menu to improve on the diner’s experience.

Spicy Aloo CrunchI start with the basic Spicy Aloo Crunch burger that is one of the cheapest in the menu and is priced at a paltry Rs. 59. The crispy baked small cuts of potatoes are not in a patty shape but add a crunch to the soft bun and, blended with a mildly spicy ghost chilli sauce, it is a treat. After going through many other burgers that I tried, this one undoubtedly came out as a winner and was my favorite. If you have ever had aloo tuktuk at Dhaba by Claridges, then you would know the inspiration behind the burger.

BaconatorNext in line is their best selling Baconator. Instead of going with double the patty, I go with a normal baconator with a single chicken patty. This burger uses grilled chicken, bacon strips and cheese and if you like bacon, it is a must have burger amongst the non vegetarian selections. The brioche bun is a bit different. It is spiked with slight chili and use of turmeric is unusual in a brioche bun where the high use of eggs and butter gives it a tender crumb. I am told that they have made the bun a little moist than before to give it a softer texture than earlier.

Chicken ChiliOne thing that I did not enjoy here at all is the Chicken Chili – it is just too liquidy and hardly has any punch. If I can put it crudely, it looked more like an Indian rajma dish with small mince of chicken thrown in.

Greek MuttonThe Smoky Chipotle in a sesame bun with crispy fried chicken and the Greek Mutton with grilled mutton patty and Tzatziki sauce are nice though I do not get the assembly of lettuce which is on the crown of the burger. The sauce seeps in to the bottom and can make the patty a bit soggy if it is kept on the table for sometime or if you are getting it packed. However, if you are eating it at the restaurant this should not bother you.

Banan Caramel FrostyI end with a Banana Caramel Frosty and at Rs. 79 it is a great value for money. The portion is large enough for three people to dig into this easy yet delicious dessert.

Service is quick and efficient at least on the day I visit. I would not have made out that the Chief Operating Officer is himself on the floor and, just like any other staff member, he is taking orders, serving and even clearing the table had he not shared his business card with me. If someone wants to follow the dictum “leading by exampleâ€, they can surely learn from Arvind Dixit, the COO of Wendy’s.

The pulled pork burger is something that Wendy’s is planning to introduce soon after seeing the great response of bacon lovers and I shall personally look forward to trying it. Sadly, they can’t do much about serving beef in Haryana but they should definitely work on introducing a fish variant too in their menu.
