Weekend In’t Derbyshire

By Ollypj @OllyPJ

Just over twenty-four hours ago, I returned home after an extended weekend break in Derbyshire, camping very close to the Peak District National Park.

Over the next few posts, I intend to share, in detail, each of my experiences from what was essentially four days and three nights in an unfamiliar landscape.

In this post, I’ll simply share a few photos from some of the main highlights, in order to whet your appetite.

Much of my first day was spent in the spa town of Buxton, as the weather upon my arrival in the county was dismal, to say the least and far from the perfect climate in which to be pitching a tent following a drive totalling more than three hours in length.

For almost the entire weekend, the weather forecast had remained ‘uninviting‘ throughout the days leading up to my getaway. Where I’d hoped to get a good couple of long walks completed, it seemed likely that I would have to prepare for other past-time arrangements to fall back on.

On my first full day in Derbyshire and after my first night within the tent, I was out walking in and around an area known as Dovedale – which, technically speaking, lies in Staffordshire.

From each of the four walks I’d pre-selected ahead of the weekend, I’d decided that this was going to be my No.1.

On my final full day ahead of my last night sleeping in a tent, I took a trip to the National Trust Lyme Park and House, which again meant crossing the Derbyshire boundary lines. But yet again, made good use of my National Trust membership [writing this reminds me that I’ve still yet to inform you of my visit to a house back in July…].

Before the long drive home, I spent some time in another local village or town, Bakewell, which is perhaps most infamous for its home-made tarts…

Of course, I bought one! I’m beginning to eat it as I write this! :-)

Overall, it was a great weekend, in spite of the ever-present dark clouds and I’m pleased without myself for having been able to complete a personal first of three nights solo camping.
