#WeDo – The Fall Fashion Edit for Moms

By Reasonstodress

September has come and gone, and as I prepare to swap out my spring and summer clothes with my winter wardrobe (I’ve written about that process here) I’m really thinking about what key pieces I need to keep in rotation to help me dress for Autumn.

Here is my Fall Edit for MOMS!  I’m focusing on key individual pieces that you can work into any outfit to keep your look updated, stylish, comfortable and BEST of all FUNCTIONAL!

If you read my blog, you know that I live by the premise that fashion doesn’t die the moment you become a mom, however, budgets do get a little tighter for new seasonal clothes.   Every season I try to focus on a few basic pieces to update my wardrobe that will help me re-style the things I already own.

In the next few weeks I’ll be posting all kinds of looks from what I like to refer to as “my Fall Capsule Collection”, with a few pairs of pants, tops and two pairs of shoes I can come up with so many different looks!

These are my top Fall Mom Essentials that can be incorporated into any Momiform (Mom + Uniform, meaning what you manage to put on your body in under 5 minutes in the morning!)

A Felt Hat

If you’ve seen this post from when I went up to the Italian Apennine Mountains with my family you’ve seen me wear a big felt hat.  Good news to moms everywhere…. these are totally trending right now.  The beauty of them is that they can take uncombed locks and turn them school-run ready in 2 seconds!

Master&Muse

Master&Muse $135 – 100% wool

No ponytail in the world is that fast and there is so much incredible variety out there.  The hat I’ve featured is by the brand Master&Muse x Pachacuti and it is felt so that your head will also be nice and warm.

A Classic Trench

Most of us have a nice classic trench in our closet, and we have to be reminded that the trench isn’t just for April.  It is a perfect transition jacket for the damp days of fall, which can get just as much rain as the spring in some areas.

I’m not sure about where you live, but we’ve been dealing with surprisngly warm weather.  Warm…..but not warm enough to head out for the entire day without a jacket.  I’ve found that a trench with a few simple layers underneath has been the perfect solution, especially on windy days when a popped collar helps keep the chill off my neck.

Oh and did I mention that a trench covers most of what you’re wearing!  Even if you go out in pijamas, if you’re wearing a trench with a felt hat over uncombed hair people will think you are put together!  (True Story happened today!) Not to mention if you add earrings!

This trench has fun detailing and is by the Italian brand Compagnia Italiana.

Boyfriend Jeans

WHY? Why did it take me so long to finally buy a real pair of boyfriend jeans?  I don’t know what I was so worried about.

Maybe because I’m petite ( under 5 feet/150 cm!), maybe I was worried they would shorten my legs or make me look stocky.  Whatever the reason, I should have invested in a pair of these a long time ago.

Boyfriend jeans are so comfortable, they give you enough room to really play and be active with your kids, plus if you happen to get them a little dirty at the playground, they look even more “authentic”.

Paired with military boots (as the Italians wear them), chelsea shoes, runners or even heels (I just need an occassion!) boyfriend jeans make any top you own look stylish! I would actually recommend buying these OFFLINE, because the perfect fit is so important to pulling them off!

A Scarf

oblong scarf

We all own scarves, and probably lots of them, so why don’t we wear them?  Italians have fully embraced wearing scarves at all times and it is one of the cheapest, fastest and most useful accessories that any mom can use to quickly pull a look together.

In the Fall, I like to focus on medium sized, patterned scarves in natural fabrics like cotton.

A White Dress Shirt

Who would have thought that the classic white dress shirt would make such a come back?  If you own one, now is the time to layer it under a cropped sweater, grey sweatshirt, oversized t-shirt or on it’s own with a statement necklace.

Here’s my mom-tip, don’t iron the whole thing.

If you layer it under a sweatshirt just iron the parts that will be seen!  Even if you get hot and decide to take the sweatshirt off later the creases will work themselves out while you wear it.  Focus on the hemline and collar , since that is what people will see!

Chelsea Rainboots

If there is ONE THING that I can honestly say was worth every single penny this season it would be my chelsea rain boots.  Remember when I wore them in this outfit, “What to pack on a trip to Northern Europe in mid–August” post, and every single day since!

colors of california

This Autumn has been damp and chelsea rubber rain boots are so comfortable and perfect for the puddles and mud!  Don’t get me wrong I love the designer rubber riding boots I bought a while ago, but they are not as comfortable!  The riding boots dig into the backs of my knees, are heavier, make my whole leg sweat and restrict my movements.

The chelsea rubber boots are lightweight, can be worn with rolled jeans (a look I am currently loving) or even with tights and an oversized sweater. Plus, they take up very little space if you need to pack them for a trip!

My pair were originally priced at 90 euro, and were obviously bought on sale for 40! The most similar pair I could find at the same price point were these totally cute sparkle rainboots by the brand Colors of California.

These are obviously still more expensive than your normal Target or Walmart rain boots, however, they are actually work-wear suitable.  Dare I say they are sophisticated rubber boots!

And that’s it!

Those are my current top items for any mom who wants to quickly update her Fall look.  What are your go to pieces?
