Wedding Dress Code – What to Wear to A WeddingWedding Dress Code

Wedding season is coming up and as exciting as it is to watch your friends and family get married, it can also be extremely daunting to figure out what to wear. There's always a fear that you'll over-dress, under-dress, wear something too similar to the bride or bridal party. Fear not, as we have listed below the do's and don'ts of wedding guest attire to ensure that you not only look and feel great at every wedding but also are dressed appropriately to wedding standards.

More and more couples are choosing to include a dress code in their wedding to enhance the theme of their big day, help guests out on their attire and to create unity in their wedding pictures. Thus, there is a high chance that the wedding you are attending will have a dress code. From here, making a decision on what to wear will be much easier. If the dress code says black-tie, chances are you will most likely be wearing an evening gown or a tuxedo.

Though some couples opt to include a dress code in their wedding, there are many couples who will not. In cases like these, it can often cause difficulties in deciding what to wear. With no guidance, how will you know that what you're wearing is appropriate?

One tip in helping the decision-making process is to consider the location of the wedding. If you're heading to the beach, chances are, you're not going to need a floor length gown and tall heels. Instead, a flowy dress may be more appropriate. Or, if you're heading towards a grand palace, it is likely that a suit or a more formal gown is appropriate.

It should be a given but in case you have never been to a wedding, the number one rule is to not wear white. It is more than likely that the bride will be wearing white, and as a guest to her wedding, there is nothing more inappropriate than looking similar to the bride at her own wedding. Thus, instead of going the complete opposite and wearing black, weddings can be a great chance to experiment with colours. Not only will this ensure that you won't look similar to the bride, but it will put you in a competition of being the best dressed guest.

Season

Hand in hand with colour, the season in which the wedding is to be held in can be a huge determining factor in what you wear to the wedding.

If the wedding you are attending is held in summer, opt for options that aren't going to make you feel hot, such as linen, flowy dresses and breezy outerwear. Further, wearing summertime colours, such as pastels, pinks and yellows can help you fit in more with the wedding.

Whilst wearing black to a wedding is no longer a big no, it's important to consider if you'd want to wear dark and heavy colours during a summer wedding. Blacks and darker colours may be more appropriate for a winter or black-tie wedding, reflected by the season or dress code.

Ask the Bride

When in doubt, the best way to get inspiration or approval of your outfit is to just ask the bride. The bride will have a clear understanding of what she wants her wedding to look like and more importantly, what is acceptable and what is not, in regard to what her guests wear.

However, it is also important to not overwhelm the bride as planning a wedding can be extremely stressful. Thus, if you know the bride is having a tough time with planning, it may be a good idea to ask a member of her bridal party, or even the groom.

Seek Inspiration from Websites

There's no better way to find the perfect wedding outfit than going online and doing research. Browsing the web will allow you to get inspiration for what you want to wear. Further, it will expose you to new designers and new seasons of clothing. You never know, you might just find something you like.
Dress Hire sites such as The Volte Dress Hire are great places to seek inspiration or to hire pieces of clothing you would like to wear. It's common for individuals to wear an outfit once and leave it their closet, especially for wedding events. Thus, hiring a dress for the wedding may be a great option if you don't think you'll wear an outfit more than once or if you're looking for budget-friendly options.
