If you are wondering how to approach someone to hand letter your place cards, envelopes, etc., here are some questions to think about and keep in mind:
  • How many envelopes should I order? Make sure you order 10% over the envelope qty. that you need. There will be a few mistakes made and 10% is an adequate number of overs for a competent calligrapher to work with.
  • When should I mail my invites? Invitations need to go out 6-8 weeks in advance of your event. Be sure to contact a calligrapher 1-2 months in advance of your anticipated MAIL date.
  • How do I go about selecting a lettering style? Decide what kind of feeling you want to create with the writing. Many calligraphers are able to execute custom styles. Don't be afraid to ask to see something else if the standard styles offered don't seem to communicate the tone of your event. Sometimes, you may want to have your envelopes match the script font used on your invitations.
  • What if I'd like a lettering style not listed? Ask your calligrapher if they have any specials or more affordable fonts than the ones they have listed.
  • Are all envelopes able to be lettered? Communicate to your calligrapher in advance if you feel that your envelopes are lined or have a strange surface. Many times, special preparations have to be made in order to accommodate your stationery. The earlier the better. 
  • What is the best way to find a calligrapher in my area? If your calligrapher has not been recommended or provided through a planner, please do your homework and make sure that they are reputable. Yelp is your friend.
