#walk1000miles – February 2017

By Ollypj @OllyPJ

I know that February is always going to be the shortest month of a year but I had to do a double-take at my watch when I read the date.

Already, March is here! Where did the first two months of the year go?

Although this is incorrect, I have always thought of February as a bridge between winter and spring. Yet, the weather is often worse through this month (and, persistently so) than in either of the previous two. Nevertheless, March is never far away and you know that Easter and spring lie just beyond the other side.

So, there are a lot of what I would consider to be very short walks in this list…

On the one hand, I could look and say that I am not walking as far or challenging myself enough. On the other hand though, I am at least getting outside quite frequently. Two miles are greater than none.

I’ve participated in one walk with a close friend, I’ve led my first group walk of the year and I’ve attended two other group walks, organised by different walk leaders.

Total for February 2017: 68.25 miles

But for another long Wiltshire walk with which to close the month, I might’ve felt disappointed with my overall tally. I did say, at one point, that I’d like to average eighty-miles each month but, for something in the region of seventy-miles, I can find contentment.

As a group, Brunel have begun walking the White Horse Trail, which is a ninety-mile long-distance path around Wiltshire. Our aim is to tackle one circular ‘stint’ each month (averaging fifteen-to-twenty miles a time) until the trek is complete. Added to my own ambition of walking the eighty-seven mile long Ridgeway path this summer, I should be able to rack up the miles conveniently.

Total for 2017 so far: 145.5 miles
