Richmond, Virginia’s Sleepwalkers released their debut full-length over the summer, and with all of its enormity, it’s time for their work to move past local lines. Greenwood Shade is an album that plays out much like those rare times when the radio plays all your favorite songs back to back. Judging from their Bandcamp tags, it would appear the band is specifically influenced by acts like Paul McCartney, Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, though in a recent interview with Richmond Navigator the band explains that they’re drawn by all sounds circa 1960-1980. Their absorption in these influences and eras bleeds through in their range as they hop from pop hook to fiery guitar riff all glossed over with a sticky, soulful psychedelia. Taking the nostalgic vibe even further, the aforementioned article also reveals that the four-piece recorded the album to a tape machine once owned by Whitney Houston and preamps once used by Van Halen, half done in a proper studio and half at their home studio.
Greenwood Shade sounds simultaneously homespun and massive. It sounds fantastic over headphones yet has you fantasizing about seeing it played out on stage complete with fog and lights. Already at work on their next album, now is the right time to listen to Sleepwalkers. Check them out starting with “Images” above and get their debut album, Greenwood Shade, here.
