There are certain songs that make my day when they come on the radio, and if we’re being honest, most of them are 90s or early 2000s hits. I could say they’re “guilty pleasures”, but I feel zero guilt because I’m too busy scream-singing. If you can relate to those statements, then you’re going to love Waitress’s “Young In Mind” just as much as I do. There’s that perfect late-90s pop intro with the basic guitar riff and sugar pop beat, then the simple but extremely catchy melody and vocals all solidify the track’s instant mood enhancing status. There’s a hint of modernity tucked inside its synths and album art, but the theme of being young and free is familiar. The indie realm has experienced a surplus of 90s rock and even R&B revivalists in recent years, so maybe this is the start of the 90s pop revival? Let’s hope it is, but either way, “Young In Mind” is crunchy and sweet and leaves us curious as to whether Waitress’s other songs will follow suit. We won’t be curious for too long — the Copenhagen trio release their debut EP this summer.
