What is Vintage Wedding Photography?

Vintage Wedding Photography

Vintage Wedding Photography absolutely exploded a few years ago and while I believe its less popular than it was, there are certainly a lot of photographers offering this style and doing it very well. So what exactly is it? Well, think of how images from the 1970's or old Polaroid film look. Vintage wedding photos are very stylised to create a certain look. It's a style that really suits Boho-Chic weddings. If you are getting married in the woods, arriving by VW camper van and eating in a Tipi then it's probably the right style for you.

Lots of washed out colours and sun flares dominate the editing style of the images. If this is your personal style then it's a fantastic look. Many vintage wedding photographers that I have seen also break a lot of the 'hidden' rules of photography. The 'Rule of Thirds' and 'Golden Ratio' are often ignored and replaced by a more free style of shooting. My only personal worry about vintage wedding photography is that it already looks like you were married in 1973 when it was actually 2017! You may look back on your images and wish they were not so heavily edited in a set style that hasn't aged well. If it is your genuine day-to-day style then it's a great choice but otherwise, I would give it a lot of thought before committing this style to the wedding images you will look at for many years to come.
