On September 24th, the doors of the Van Gogh Museum on Paulus Potterstraat in Amsterdam closed for the remainder to 2012 and a good chunk of 2013. Movers were set to work, removing the 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 letters by renowned artist and the museum's namesake Vincent van Gogh. The museum will undergo restoration and reopen sometime in the spring of 2013.
That's a long time for the Netherlands' most visited museum (and, as of 2011, the 23rd most visited museum in the world) to be roped off. What are Van Gogh lovers to do in the meantime?
As you'll recall, many of the artist's works are on display at the Beurs van Berlage through May 19, 2013. If that's not enough to satiate, you can also head over to the Hermitage Amsterdam until April 25, 2013 for their presentation Vincent: The Van Gogh Museum in the Hermitage Amsterdam.
The display includes roughly 75 letters, paintings, personal objects, and "works on paper." Some highlights you can expect to see are Sunflowers, The potato eaters, The bedroom, and Almond blossoms. The focus will be on what inspired and motivated Van Gogh as an artist.
Selections from the Van Gogh Museum collection were already on exhibit at the Hermitage for the Impressionism: Sensation & Inspiration, Highlights from the Hermitage exhibition, which ends in January.
E-tickets to the Heritage Museum Amsterdam are now available via Amsterdam City Tours. Ticket holders need only print their ticket, which can be scanned at the entrance - no waiting in line.
