Visual Effects (VFX) has been an integral part of Hollywood films since ages, and with time it has only become better and more realistic. In fact, Hollywood films are lauded worldwide because of the detailing and realistic VFX. VFX by default brings grandness to a film and is a technology which gives a certain edge to the creative medium.
Thus, in an attempt to break the current barriers of cinema, the World's largest film industry- the Indian film industry's producers and directors have also fiddled with the technology which is fast changing the landscape of cinema making and viewing experience. VFX would allow the makers to give a more impactful scene on the big screen, which in turn would entice the moviegoers. However, VFX can be an expensive affair and mostly commercialized movies are able to employ them to any extent.
Here is a list of a few Indian movies which have successfully used VFX and without VFX these films won't have seen the daylight.
Tik Tik Tik (2018)
Tik Tik Tik is a first of its kind in the Indian cinema. The film promoted as India's first space film is a Tamil science fiction thriller helmed by Shakti Soundar Rajan. Jayam Ravi, Aaron Aziz, and Nivetha Pethuraj features in the lead roles. The story follows a gang of misfits who have been recruited by India in order to tackle a large asteroid headed for Earth. Considering the fact that a large part of the movie is set in space, VFX accounts for almost 80 minutes of the film. The film which was released on 22nd June, 2018, was panned by critics for a weak plot, but the VFX of the film has been lauded from all corners.
Fan (2016)
Shah Rukh Khan did an admirable job in this movie, with his double roles. The weak script and storyline did not help his case, however. The movie received a lukewarm reception by critics and fans alike. The VFX of the movie was still praised all over the board, and it was a testament to the hard work of the team of 'Fan'.
I (2015)
This film is directed by Shankar and stars Amy Jackson and Vikram in the lead roles. Bearing in mind the type of story that the film was trying to tell, its post-production needed to have strong VFX and prosthetics in order to create the perfect presentation to complement the main storyline. Thanfully, V. Srinivas Mohan got it absolutely right with the VFX, and the film turned out to be a huge success.
Eega (2015)
Another one of S.S. Rajamouli's directives, this one had a curious plotline. A man exacts revenge on the antagonist after he is reincarnated as a fly. In order to depict this sort of conundrum, the producers had to make sure that the VFX was top notch. Due to the unique story and great VFX, this movie was another cult hit in South Indian cinema.
Baahubali 1 and 2 (2015 and 2017)
The first movie of the duology was released in 2015, followed by its sequel 'Baahubali: The Conclusion' in 2017. Apart from the fact that both movies were huge hits, with the ending of the first movie sprouting numerous internet memes, the VFX used in the films were something which was never seen before on the Indian big screen. The second movie did garner some criticism for cutting corners on VFX. Nonetheless, the duology's achievements on the VFX front should make S.S. Rajamouli proud.
Krrish 2 and 3 (2006 and 2013)
These two movies of the Rakesh Roshan franchise turned out to be the biggest hits of Bollywood for their time. Considering the fact that they are superhero movies, amazing VFX was an absolute must in the movies. Hrithik Roshan and the rest of the cast did not disappoint, as, despite critical failure, the movies did very well in the box office. They were absolute visual treats.
Vishwaroopam (2013)
This Kamal Hassan movie released in 2013 to critical acclaim. The film boasts of the likes of Rahul Bose and Pooja Kumar in the main cast, along with VFX which knocked the ball out of the park. The story itself was quite different, and engaged the audience. It was coupled with some equally good computer imagery which made it a super hit at the box office.
Dhoom 3 (2013)
The 'Dhoom' series has always been known for its over-the-top action and ensemble casts. This time, however, the entire Indian audience was surprised by the inclusion of Aamir Khan as the antagonist. He added a certain emotional depth to the franchise, and the VFX that was added to the film definitely kept the Indian moviegoers on the edge of their seats with its high quality.
Ra.One (2011)
Ra.One was known for being the most expensive Bollywood movie of all time, during its release. Although that record was later broken by other movies, Shah Rukh Khan's superhero movie failed to pave the way for other such movies in the industry. Instead, it flopped and received a lukewarm reception. Regardless, one of the things that the critics cannot take away from this movie is the fact that the producers did not skimp on the budget for VFX.
Enthiran (2010)
This 2010 movie, directed by Shankar and starring none other than the legendary actor Rajinikanth, was replete with VFX. The entire story centered around robots and machinery, so it was important for the special effects to stand up to the task. As is evident by its phenomenal success, the VFX was more than up to the task. It remains as one of the biggest hits to come out of South Indian regional cinema.
