When asked Valve denied the rumors and said they are not working on any hardware. But it looks like they’ve been secretly working on it after all.

“We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That’ll be a Linux box,” Valve co-founder Gabe Newell told The Verge. He has also mentioned that the Steam Box would run on Linux and work as a server to support networked gaming. Which means it will support several displays and controllers allowing a many people to interact with the console.

Talking to Engadget, Valve engineer Ben Krasnow  said that Valve doesn’t have any plans to reveal any detailed info about the project, at least not until after 2013.  So, we will have to wait a while to learn more interesting details about this new project. And of course by that time Microsoft will also bring out their next-gen console as well.

Engadget also managed to snap some pictures of the prototypes of Steam Box. Hit those source links after the break to take a closer look at the device.
