The small community of Greenville, VA, population 832, is in an uproar over a class assignment by a 9th-grade teacher at Rivershead High School.
As reported by Breitbart on Dec. 21, 2015, the world geography teacher, Cheri Laporte, recently gave a class assignment to her students to hand copy the Arabic characters for the shahada, which translates as:
“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”
Recitation of the shahada is a fundamental step in conversion to Islam.
According to parents, students were not informed of the translation or of the meaning of the shahada they were being asked to copy. Female students were invited to don Muslim apparel and subsequently were photographed in costume by the teacher. (Reportedly, a school administrator has since disposed of the photos.) Apparel representing other religions was not presented in the lesson.
Laporte knew what shahada means and is unapologetic about the assignment. She also circulated a Koran to her students while refusing to do the same with the Bible, according to reports from a parent meeting.
Some parents demanded that Laporte be fired.
But The Daily Dot reports that Superintendent Eric Bond and the Virginia Department of Education reviewed LaPorte’s material and found nothing wrong — that her assignment was in line with state standards and in no way posed a threat to the students’ rights. “Neither of these lessons, nor any other lessons in the world geography course, are an attempt at indoctrination to Islam or any other religion or a request for students to renounce their own faith or profess any belief,” Bond told local reporters.
Virginia school officials actually closed over a dozen schools as a safety precaution on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015.
The (Lexington) News-Gazette is the third oldest newspaper in Virginia, and the oldest in the state west of the Blue Ridge, with a publishing tradition that goes back to 1801.
Reacting to the Laporte incident, this venerable newspaper proclaims in an editorial that the antidote to Muslim “extremism” is more “tolerance”. I suggest the publisher and editor of The News-Gazette look up the meaning of “useful idiot“.
