Appliance manufacturer LG has announced the winners of its Smart Discoveries award, which encouraged customers to find innovative, unusual, quirky uses for home appliances. Over 800 submissions were made showcasing the unusual ideas.
Six winners were chosen, one for each category of appliance. The winners were chosen by an online vote and by an in-house panel of LG staff. The winners were awarded LG appliances for their ingenuity.
“We’re very pleased that consumers got the chance to share their ideas and creativity through this event while also having the opportunity to get closer to LG’s products,” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Home Appliance Company. “This unconventional campaign was very meaningful to us as it was executed by consumers, evaluated by consumers and shared by consumers.”

The Washer Ice Bucket
Having a party and need more room for cold drinks? User UBERBzy submitted the idea of using one’s washing machine as a giant ice bucket. While the idea will probably work best with a top load washing machine, you can chill a smaller quantity of drinks in your front load washer as well.
The a-ha moment comes when it is time to clean up after the shindig – just put your washer on a hot quick rinse cycle to quickly melt the ice. Or just run the washing machine’s drain cycle the next morning.
Mosquito Vacuum
Tired of mosquitoes cheating and flying out of reach? Fight those blood suckers with your own sucker – your vacuum cleaner! The extensions should make it easy to reach even the farthest corners where skeeters and other flying pests congregate. Vasili Kiselev submitted this idea and cute video to demonstrate.
Microwave Idea: The Quick Girlfriend Bribe
The road to guy’s heart might be through the stomach, but Jack Kong posted this humorous guide to a really fast gift idea that any guy can make in a matter of minutes for their girlfriend or wife using the microwave and some eggshells. Any guy. No excuses.
Set the mood for your special night, and don’t let on about your ulterior motive that you want her to cook for you in exchange.
Robot Vacuum Cat Toy
Cats and vacuum cleaners may not get along most of the time. But Fatma Kaplan created this cover for her LG HOM-BOT robotic vacuum to create a friend for her pet. Looks like these two get along just fine.
Salmon à la Dishwasher
This dish is probably not available at the most exquisite and eccentric restaurants.
Fritzie Carla writes: “Aside from being able to sterilize common items, a dishwasher could also be used to cook salmon. Just place it in sheets of aluminum foil after seasoning, seal it and place it in top rack, run hottest wash(without detergent!), dry cycle, bon appetit!”
Char-Cool Refrigerator Odor Eliminator
This clever idea comes from arki_sher’s mom, who taught him that charcoal is an effective odor eliminator. While you could buy a fancy charcoal filter, just a few pieces in a cup can make a difference in your refrigerator.
