So I thought it would be good to start at the beginning...how I chose my course and the university I wanted to go to.
Ever since I was little I wanted to do something that would help other s and make a difference to their lives. For ages I wanted to be a teacher, but then I came across psychology. When I was very ill a couple of years ago they were unsure what was wrong with me and asked a psychologist to talk to me to try and rule out things like stress, depression and other mental health illnesses. The psychologist concluded it was not to do with any mental illness. However I got talking to her about her job and I loved the sound of it. Being able to help people, children to the elderly this was the job I had been looking for. From then till now I have my eyes firmly set on becoming a psychologist either a counseling psychologist or educational psychologist.
Next was choosing a university. I live in Scotland and I wanted to stay in Scotland. Nearly all universities hold open days. It gives you the chance to look round the university they usually do talks about each subject accommodation and a multitude of other universities. Universities can also provide you with a prospectus which gives you information on all the courses and tells you about the university so they are always good to collect. From being at a number of universities I created a list of those I wanted to go to.In the UK we have a university application process called UCAS which allows you to apply to 5 universities, you fill in your details, write a personal statement and then it sends your application to the universities. It is a really simple process, I'm not sure what the process is in other countries? It not just the course you have to think about when choosing a university. Think about accommodation or transport if traveling from home, whether you want to go to a campus university or if you don't mind it spread about all over a city, what size is the university, can I meet their entry requirements (usually 4bs and above, for subject like medicine and dentistry usually 5As), social life, societies, do you like the city it is in etc.
My five choices were Edinburgh, Stirling, Dundee, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Then a simple waiting game to see who you receive offers from.Once you receive your offers you pick two and discard the rest. My two were Edinburgh and Stirling. To get into Edinburgh I need two As but I have a secure place at Stirling if I don't get the results. Results day is the 6th of August so fingers crossed till then although I would be happy at either of the universities.Good luck to all those waiting on results and I hope you get the ones you need. I will keep you updated. I think I might do a haul next of some of the things I have bought for Uni.
Remember anything you want me to include just tell me.Laura x
