Most of us wear them, at least from time to time- we have our lucky pair; sexy pair; cozy pair- we don’t talk about our underwear often but that trend has been changing. For a piece of clothing many consider a daily staple, there are skimpy* resources or a general lack of info. That being said, this is a compilation of fun facts about undies:
The Official Bra Was Invented in 1913
According to funbag support legend, a frustrated woman created and wore the first bra made of two handkerchiefs tied together. Practical, yes. Ideal, not really. Thank goodness they started making bras with cups soon after- imagine a one-size fits all? Next imagine a Pamela Anderson-type trying to wear kerchiefs. Oh, my bad- she calls that her bikini.
Boxers vs. Briefs, the Raging Debate
Briefs have had their hey-day, when they replaced the full-legged long johns of yore. Enter: boxers. Many online surveys report boxers having a leg up on briefs, with boxer-briefs gaining momentum in the last few years. Oddly, women seem to prefer boxers. Perhaps for the same reason we believe Speedos should be banned, as in leave us some room for imagination.
When Was the First G-String Invented?
Another hotly debated topic in the underwear world, some claim it was at the World’s Fair in NYC. Others contend it was in the early 70s. The loudest, i.e. most passionate argument comes from Brazilians, who say they popularized the G-string in the 1980s. No matter, it’s now the number one underwear sold, worldwide. Such ado over such an eensy-teensy scrap of cloth.
Mother Always Said To Put On Fresh Undies
It’s interesting first of all that there is an official survey done (by the International Underwear Survey Group, of course) and that people seem to reply honestly to it. A few facts you might not want to know: married men change their underwear twice as much as singles. Pilots change their undies the most (understandable, that) with taxi drivers and doctors changing their drawers the least. Yes, I know- doctors.
Cross-Dressing Isn’t Based on Gender
The number of men buying lingerie for themselves has increased yearly. Over 31% owned up to owning a piece or two of lingerie for his personal use. When you think about it, why not? It’s sexy, satiny and feels really cool against your skin. A surprising 82% of ladies fessed up to wearing men’s undies. I’m assuming those are the ones that throw on boxers, thinking they look like shorts-?
Underwear Nicknames
Only choosing the most giggle inducing, for a bra: flopper stopper. The word ‘panty’ is already a slang term. For briefs, cluster grabbers. Going commando, by the by, is rumored to be based on ‘going regimental’- which meant prepping for war in a kilt undie-less.
There you have it, the best fun facts on undies compiled for your curious pleasure. Please, feel free to add any others you know of- and if you’re a doctor, please wash your hands first?
