When you have been exposed to stunning photos (often digitally enhanced) of beautiful islands, iconic buildings or dramatic landscapes all your life, you sometimes wonder if a destination will live up to its beautiful images. Think Heart Reef in the Whitsundays, the Taj Mahal in India and the Australian outback.

So it was with excited anticipation, tinged with a hint of anxious scepticism, that I visited Uluru for the first time last year.
