UK Converts Red Phone Boxes into “Solarbox” to Let People Charge Their Smartphones

Posted on the 07 October 2014 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

The first Solarbox was unveiled just recently in Tottenham Court Road, London. Packing a 86cm solar panel, each Solarbox will be capable of recharging 100 phones per day. They will be open to public and tourists from 5:30am to 11:30pm. So what’s the catch, you ask? Well, there’s a pretty big reinforced screen installed inside the booth to show you some ads while you charge up your phone. It’s basically a win-win situation for both parties. Online services such as Tinder and Uber have already signed up to fill the booths with their ads.

More of those old phone boxes will soon be converted to Solarboxes to bring this service to more people around the city, starting with five more booths by April 2015
