Writing, for me, has always had a bit of a metaphysical edge to it. It’s why I struggle to write regularly, I like to feel like I need to write, rather than have to: forever the luxury of the amateur.
Writing, for me, tends to begin because I’m struggling with some emotion, or trying to figure something out. I don’t know why but ordering things into rhyme or prose helps me get things clear in my head. Tend to write most when supremely stressed or depressed or confused or angry; and hardly ever when happy – my happy stuff SUCKS!
So what’s this got to do with superpowers? Well, it’s there’s lots of things that get in the way of me writing and therefore sorting my head out. It’s all those things that fuck with my head that I would like to be free from as my superpower.
As a famous philosopher once said, ‘Art is the proper purpose of life.’ This philosopher also came up with the notion of the ‘Ubermensch’ or, to translate it crassly, ‘Superman’.
I would like to be the ‘Superman’ Nietsc… Nietchz… DAMMIT! NIETZSCHE (one day I’m going to spell that name right first time) outlined. Not the ludicrous cartoon Hitler understood it to be, but the ideological superman, free from received hegemonic ideas and with an ego (the term itself is laden with unfair negative connotations) an EGO strong enough to reject the structures, strictures and scriptures imposed on it. An EGO strong enough to make Art the proper purpose of its life, instead of a side-dish to spreadsheets.
Put simply, I have always respected those people who can live free of the fear of poverty and put their writing first in their life. The people who can say, ‘Stuff ya job’ and live their lives for inspiration first and foremost without resorting to being benefit scroungers. People who reject money and materialism and live as if the only important thing in their day is getting a chapter written, stuff food!
I am privileged enough to know a few of these people. They truly are superheroes. Knowing these people exist is a comfort. I hope one day I can be an Ubermensch too.
