India has a wide range of finger licking, delectable & luscious Indian sweets and desserts. These sweets are the most sought after delicacy that’s offered to the deity and come in different shapes, sizes and colors. A numerous amount of flavors are also added to the desserts for making them tasty. More popular as Mithai, they are a kind of confectionery which rely heavily on sugar, milk, flour, cardamom powder and condensed milk. In southern part of India coconut milk is popularly used while preparing a dessert, while in northern part of India, most of the desserts are made with milk products.

Without any doubt, it can be stated that people love to prepare as well as to have these delicious and tasty, colorful and flavored desserts no matter what time of the year it is or what occasion it is. Today,  the popularity of Indian desserts has spread all over the world. You can find varieties of  dessert in each part of the different countries of the world. Whether you are visiting Europe, Australia, UK etc. finding an Indian dessert is the easiest task that you could do. These are even available in the best restaurants of Vancouver.

Mainly Indian sweets are prepared in two varieties : One is the flour based sweets such as Malpua, Halwa, Gulab Jamun, Ladoos, Sweet Shells, Kakinada Khaja, Mohanthal and the other is milk based sweets that include Rabri, Ras Malai, Kalakandh, Kheer and the list is infinite! It has been stated that no other country has such a wide range of sweets and desserts like India.

In Indian culture, desserts are one of the most important food that are served as the last course of a meal. Most of them are available throughout the year. Every state has its own different traditional signature dessert that are prepared during any religious rituals or festivals. Like for example, a grand wedding, or a simple get together party always ends up with a mouth melting and yummy sweet!

  • Ras-Malai: This sweet dessert has originated from Bengal and people also call it as Rosh-malai. They are served after a meal. “Ras” means juicy/juice and “malai” means cream. Ras-malai is prepared with cream, white or yellow colored flattened balls of paneer soaked in malai and flavored with cardamom.
  • Gulab-Jamun: Gulab-Jamun is a waffle shaped ball that is deep fried and then dipped in sugar syrup. The dessert is popular in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
  • Mysore-Pak: This dish comes from the South-Indian cuisine and is served as a tasty dessert. It is prepared with bountiful amount of ghee (clarified butter), gram flour and sugar.
