Shoulder length, baby fine hair like mine, leaves a girl with limited styling options. My bed-head is more Garth than come-hither. I check the humidity daily because my blowout is immediately busted with anything over 65%. Forget french, fishtail, or any braid for that matter. Thoughts run through my head like "Is my hairline receding, or is my forehead just that big?" A side bang and pretty ponytail are about as good as it gets. That is until I met the top knot.
Like the perfect sunless tan, or well kept no-chip mani, the top knot is one of my favorite beauty hacks. Taking only two minutes, it's my go-to, midweek, I overslept, and haven't washed my hair in four days, hair-do. Plus, everyone looks as cute as a button while donning one. Below are my instructions for a perfect top knot. Beginners beware, because as you can see, these directions are for only the most experienced hair stylististas.
- Gather dry (preferably dirty) hair and put it up in a high ponytail.
- Secure with an elastic hair tie.
- Wrap and twist the hair around the hair band. Wrap ends around the base and tuck into the underside of the hair tie.
- Pull and separate hair to your liking to create volume.
- Pin pieces accordingly to create your desired shape (I always leave a few pieces "out of place" to achieve a more unkempt look).
- Spray with hairspray until you've created a death cloud of aerosol and can barley breath.
