Tsuyama flourished as a junction of trades between the two ancient powers, Izumo and Yamato, and as a castle town. The castle is gone now, but, A samurai’s residence ,and old merchants’ residences are preserved well.

かつて津山は,出雲街道の要衝として,さらに,日本一の名城とも謳われた津山城城下町として大いに栄えました。
今では城跡は石垣のみを残すだけですが,城西には武家屋敷が,そして城東には堂々たる商家の街並みが良い状態で保存されており見応えがあります。敵の侵入を防ぐことを目的とした鍵字の街区も非常に興味深いです。
私が訪れた折は,残念ながら雨模様でしたが,もし快晴のもとで散策したならば,青空と白壁とが織りなすコントラストがさぞや美しかっただろうと,少し心残りがあります。
