These charts were made using information in a new survey by the Pew Research Center. The survey was done between April 25th and May 1st of a random national sample of 1,503 adults. The survey had a margin of error of 2.9 points (about 4.5 points for demographic groups).
The survey shows Trump is still very unpopular with the American public. By a 16 point gap, the public disagrees with Trump on the issues (41% agree and 57% disagree). It gets even worse when people are asked if they approve of how Trump conducts himself in office. About 54% disapprove, while only 19% approve (and the rest say they have mixed feelings. And the public doesn't think much of the ethics of Trump appointees either. About 65% say officials in the Trump administration have poor ethics, while 31% say their ethics are good -- a negative gap of 34 points.
The result is that Trump's job approval remains upside-down. Only 39% approve of the job he is doing, while 54% disapprove. That's a 15 point gap, and that negative gap has remained steady for many months now. Trump has been unable to improve it significantly.
With Trump's numbers remaining this bad, would you want Trump to come to your district to campaign for you if you were a Republican congressional candidate. I don't think so. In a district rated as competitive or just leaning Republican, a visit by Trump could easily do more harm than good.
Trump, being a narissist, likes to think he is popular and would help Republican candidates. But the truth is that he has no coattails. GOP congressional candidates are on their own for the November election.
