Politics Magazine
This chart uses results from a new Politico / Morning Consult Poll -- done between March 1st and 5th of a random national sample of 1,993 registered voters, with a 2 point margin of error.
It shows just how much trouble Donald Trump would be in if he had to run for re-election right now. Among all registered voters, he has an 8 point deficit. Trump does best among men, voters over 45, and Whites. But take note -- he only breaks even in those groups, and that spells trouble. It's trouble because he has a big deficit with those under 45 and with minorities.
But perhaps his biggest problem is with women. They are the largest voting group in this country and they vote in larger numbers than men. And Trump is doing very poorly among women voters -- having a huge 15 point deficit. If he can't fix that, his defeat is assured.
I know it's more than two years before he has to worry about being re-elected, but these numbers are applicable to the upcoming election in November. The numbers show that Trump has no coattails for Republican candidates to cling to. In fact, positioning themselves too close to Trump could actually work against them in the general election (especially with women).
