My mom once told me to never underestimate the power of a great coat. This is especially true if you live in Chicago. Once December hits, your coats become your best friends. I've made it my mission to expand my coat collection this winter. I already have a dynamite Soia & Kyo down coat. It's feminine silhouette is a rarity for puffy jackets, but it's basic black. A coat in a bold color is always daring (in a great way), but is there anything more risky, dare I say treacherous, than a WHITE coat?
White, especially in outerwear, is major trend that is snowballing this season (like that snow pun?). I'd be lying if I said I wasn't living in constant fear of stains. If I see someone with a glass of red wine within ten feet of me, I make a beeline in the opposite direction. But lets say a city bus splashes past me, leaving my white coat muddy and gray. Oh well! That's what a dry cleaner is for!
Styling Tip: Avoiding white after Labor Day is pure nonsense. I love pairing my white coat with skinny black pants and my highest black booties. I think the simplicity of black and white is timeless. For a pop of color, go for a bold scarf and a printed or textured handbag.
