Does anyone remember book fairs from elementary school? I can remember going home with the pamphlet and circling every book I wanted to buy the next day at school. I’ll never forget one of my purchases in 4th grade; a coloring book. Similar to the adult coloring books that are super popular today. I can remember my teacher making photo copies for the class and taking time everyday to color one. Seriously, it was amazing.
Fast forward 19 years (yikes that’s scary to say) and coloring is still one of my favorite pastimes. Especially with my anxiety and recent panic attacks. It’s something that calms me down and allows me to focus my energy or anxious feelings positively. It’s something I can do with my kids or something I can take some time to do when they’re at school or before I go to bed. One of my worst habits? Being active on social media or in front of the computer until the minute I lay my head down. Coloring allows me to unplug and just release some creative energy.
Adult coloring is super trendy right now and for obvious reasons… it’s fun! But not only is it fun, it’s a great way to clear your mind. Our day in age is so busy that a few quiet minutes in the morning or before bed will help you to feel more relaxed and in tune with yourself.
To get into adult coloring you’ll need:
Coloring books (or online printouts work too!)
Colored pencils (markers work too but I prefer colored pencils because they create a softer look and don’t bleed through the page)
Pencil sharpener (I prefer a manual one)
Some coloring books come with lessons and tips but I prefer to just kind of do my own thing! It’s my creative release and I try to do it a little each day. Rome wasn’t built in one day so think of each page as a work in progress that you can sit down and come back to when you have some more free time.
You know what makes these quiet moments even sweeter? Treating yourself. I recently picked up these Betty Crocker™ Sweet Rewards Cookie Bars from Walmart and they are heaven on Earth. I honestly couldn’t decide which flavor to try so I bought all of them! (Don’t judge…). They’re a highly indulgent treat but yet convenient and just the right serving. Sometimes we need to indulge and treat ourselves and these Betty Crocker Sweet Rewards Cookie Bars are the perfect opportunity to do just that. Plus, you won’t have to share when you’re by yourself
Taking a few minutes each day is so good for your mental health. Whether you struggle with anxiety or stress, we could all use a few extra minutes to unwind and treat ourselves. Don’t you agree?
