Last Sunday, couldn’t have been a more perfect fall morning. It was brightly sunny, and warm, of course to my liking, and just too beautiful to stay indoors. The day was calling for an adventure and a drive to my happy place, the farm. Alstede Farms is one of the biggest, and certified organic farms in New Jersey. They make their appearance at most farmer’s market, as well as their CSA program, so I’m fortunate to bring home their amazing produce weekly. But this morning, with orange pumpkins in sight we headed to their amazing farm. It seemed like everyone had the same thought, as it was busy, but I didn’t mind. Just being outside and seeing all the wonderful colors the season has to offer was perfect. I already had gone apple picking early in the season to this orchard, but the best part of going a bit later are the abundance of different varieties of apples that are now ready to pick, and bring home. Plus, not to mention that now the iconic trees are in their colorful prime. The sky, a calming yet bold blue – the perfect backdrop, for rows of green trees overflowing with red apples, and an orange, yellow, and red rainbow of leaves. Even with some many people around, I felt at home, a peaceful happiness. I’ve been missing Portugal and in turn, living on the farm, and it was just what I needed. The fresh air, and nature all around. I even enjoyed all the families together, kids playing with the animals in the petting zoo, and some experiencing apple picking and being on a farm for the first time, and that will always put a smile on my face. After two boxes filled with apples to the brim, we headed to their already picked pumpkin patch, since my still-wobbly knee couldn’t make it to the patch with a camera in one hand and a heavy box in the other. From spooky looking gourds, to calming hues of greens, grays, and oranges, in the oddest of shapes. Each one lovely in their own unique way. Along with pick your orchards, vegetables and on-site market, Alstede Farms has an outdoor garden with beautiful fall flowers and decor. But the best part is their store filled with homemade baked goods, like their amazing apple cider donuts, so soft and light, and endless jars of jams and butters, gallons of freshly pressed apple cider. The day of course had the end with their equally delicious ice cream, and what’s better that a bowl of apple cider donut and pumpkin chocolate chip ice cream, which inspired me to make my own richly spiced pumpkin ice cream. It was the perfect way to enjoy nature and the fleeting warm days of Fall.
