The ending of this book is unforgettable. Raik, the heroine, is one of the strongest women you will ever meet.
How do you react to a bad review of your book?
Everyone gets them. I'd rather have a great one, but sometimes people don't like a story, or there's some aspect that bothers them. If more than one reviewer mentions an issue, I pay attention. Otherwise, I smile and move on, and write the next book.
What would we find under your bed?
I have a huge California King canopy bed that was designed as a waterbed, even though it now has a traditional mattress. So the only thing under there are supports. And probably, underneath those -- since I can't move them -- is dust. I'll dust it when I move, which I hope isn't for years!
Describe what it's like to be an author in three words.
Obsessing about details.
Do your friends think you are an introvert or an extravert? Why?
They think I'm an extravert, but I'm really an introvert who's learned to cope. I seem to be able to handle being around people, but it's a total fake out. I can manage for short periods, but to get my energy back, I need time alone. That's how I regroup.

Locating this quarry might be a bit past even their considerable skills. After all, how do you find an invisible man in another dimension? And who, exactly, is footing a bill this steep? Certainly not the archaeologist in charge. The military wants to get involved, but they have no monetary stake either. So who -- or what -- is behind the request to trail Kaiwulf?

Excerpt from Trailing Kaiwulf
The scene: TRAIL agents Jee and Dane take a walk after dinner to plan how they're going to locate Kaiwulf. Since he's invisible and in another dimension, this is going to be work. The pair of arches mentioned below are shaped somewhat like the Saint Louis Gateway Arch, but stand on a backward planet peopled by the remnants of a dying civilization. The arches are being studied by an archaeologist, and finding Kaiwulf is vital to understanding their use.

The shadow of an arch fell across the encampment. Dane groaned, and stopped so abruptly Jee almost walked into him. It took a moment to realize why.
Someone had planted a stick in the ground and had hung a can upside down over it. Painted in red were the words, "Welcome to Nowhere. Now entering the middle."
Dane tilted back his head, and looked up at the Gates of Life. "Beautiful, aren't they? Such a desolate image."
Their dark shapes rose high into the night sky above the camp, stark against the bright light of a full orange moon. Standing at the edge of a stagnant pond, the gates stood in the reflected glimmer of village fires burning on the other side. Music and laughter from camp behind them came and went on the night wind. From the village came the sound of a woman yelling, followed by the whack of a hand on flesh and the sound of a child's wail. Dogs or wolves barked. A croaking bullfrog jumped out of the water and hopped away. A bird hooted in a tree, then took wing, scaring up several of his kin.
"Jee, why do you suppose these gates still work? Dr. Post said the ones they found on other worlds were in shambles, and the other set on this world had been torn down. Why are these still up?"
"Why you askin' me?"
"Come on. You play with puzzles. What kept this set in use?"
She shrugged. "I dunno. Maybe the people figured if they took care of the Gate, the Saint guy wouldn't come back. Sounded to me as if nobody liked seeing him."
"Maybe. What does she know about the key?"
"Well, it was stuck in the Gate. Hmm. She doesn't know anything about it except where it was found. Since she doesn't know what it was supposed to do, how could she know if it worked or not?"
"Do you suppose Kaiwulf knew the story of his great times-a-thousand grandfather and his Phane wife?"
"Dr. Post said all the villagers knew it."
"And didn't Dr. Post say she was the only one who'd seen him in person?"
"Yeah. So?" Jee slapped at a bug.
"How do you suppose she managed to get that hoverchair into a cave? You saw the maps she gave us. You have to crawl to get into them."
"Yeah. Yeah! Why? What's that mean? You think she made it up? You think she's faking or something?"
Dane turned and started walking back toward the camp, his shadow long in the moon's light.
Jee kept pace beside him. "You have an idea, don't you? I can always tell. You start walking with that skippy kind of bounce."
"Question." He stopped and turned toward her. "How does a person who can't walk explore a cave?"
"I dunno. By remote maybe?" Jee snapped her fingers. "Wait. I'll bet it was by robotic extension."
Dane shook his head and patted her on the shoulder. "No. Nice try, though. One more question. How do you suppose an archaeological expedition as poorly funded as this one can afford to pay the fees we're getting?"
"This is poorly funded?"
"Look around." Dane gestured toward the camp. "Do you see any high tech equipment? Fancy shelters? Big rigs or expensive lighting? No. A third party is paying for us to be here."
"Military?"
"If it was, Morris wouldn't be giving us crap. He'd be demanding his money's worth."
Jee frowned. "So who's funding us?"
"That's the real question." Yawning, Dane stretched. "I'm going to bed. I want to go fishing in the morning."
"What? Fishing? We're supposed to figure out how to get to another dimension, and you want to go fishing?"
"I do my best thinking that way."
"I'm not eating anything you catch in water that smells like that." Jee jerked a thumb toward the pond.
He glanced at it and laughed. "Wait till you see my bait."
