The brilliant Ultrasound return in December with their third studio album 'Real Britannia', the soundtrack to a beautiful country broken and scarred by right wing ideals, corruption and greed. After being hailed as the next big thing in the late 90s, disillusion with the music industry and the weight of pressure took its toll on the band after the release of their mammoth debut album 'Everything Picture' in 1999. The group returned in 2010, and released the superb album 'Play For Today' in 2012 (reviewed HERE). Having spent the last few years recording their third full-length, frontman Andrew 'Tiny' Wood, bassist and vocalist Vanessa Wilson, guitarist Richard Green, keyboardist Bob Birch and new drummer Bruce Renshaw are now preparing to unleash 'Real Britannia'. RW/FF spoke to Vanessa about the superb new track 'Soul Girl', which allies 70s punk with kinetic Krautrock rhythms and finds Vanessa taking lead vocals."I'm in a band with two of the greatest song writers this world has produced. I'm not even just saying it, it is a mind blowing privilege to work with Richard and Tiny. To the point that it's actually beyond my control, I'd love to live in the rolling countryside of Dorset by the sea and pickle things, but when we stand in a room together and play, all of our earth failings simply fall away and the pain and shit that surrounds us melts away and we are golden. I wrote 'Soul Girl' on a train traveling north, I had sat on it a while before daring to bring it to Ultrasound. They like it and love playing it live which is good because I have always found it easier to champion Richard and Tiny. I guess I found my voice!"
The band will be launching the album at the Scala in Kings Cross, London on November 30, co-headlining with the magnificent Dodgy. Vanessa recently contributed her powerful vocals to Dodgy's recent (and highly recommended) LP 'What Are We Fighting For', and has played with Mathew and Andy from the band in soul covers group The Soulwinners for a number of years now.
