Move over, Tove Lo: there’s a new Tove in town, and she’s actually been around a little bit longer. Meet Tove Styrke, whose self-titled debut dropped way back in 2010, and whose performance Webster Hall’s intimate Studio space proved she’s a force to be reckoned with. Ultra-catchy, effervescent pop tracks like “Ego,” “Number One” and “High and Low” will do little to dispel comparisons to that other Tove (to say nothing of Robyn), but Styrke may be at her best when she recalls yet another talented Swede: Elliphant. The reggae-inflected “Borderline” and “Snaren” found Styrke at her most loose-limbed and energetic. They also found her audience, which is bound to grow exponentially once her sophomore LP Kiddo lands next month, at their most gleefully rapt. And really, the more Toves out there making music this excellent, the better.
