Julie Hastings is a young newly licensed veterinarian who relocates to a remote small town in South Dakota so she can start a fresh life away from her abusive stepfather and uncaring mother. She is a gifted intuitive healer. The small town provides the sanctuary she seeks, and she fits in well with the locals. There is a dark secret that the town is guarding, and as events unfold Julie finds herself attracted to two very different men.
I loved the description of the town and surrounding area.Julie enjoys hiking on her days off and is usually accompanied by a large wolf.As the story progresses the feeling of impending doom escalates. There is a strong sense of danger lurking on the periphery of the town, and throughout the book the author continually ratchets up the tension, sustaining suspense.Minor mishaps and misadventures turn more serious.Meanwhile, Julie struggles to make sense of her feelings, and as her heart pulls her in an unexpected direction she discovers a secret that confounds her sensibilities and forces her to face buried fears.
I enjoyed the sense of danger interlaced with an understated slow-to-boil romance. It makes sense that after enduring such horrific treatment from her stepfather Julie would naturally be fearful of strong, brutish looking men, and that she would have serious trust and commitment issues.I enjoyed the subtle way in which Julie slowly opens her heart and regains her self-esteem; trusting her innate instincts to make choices right for her.
This book was provided to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.
